Advertising in the 1920s

Heavy advertisement first started when products started becoming mass produced during America's first industrial revolution. With the completion of the transcontinental railroad, many products were now available everywhere. Advertising now shifted from the announcement of new products to trying to persuade consumers to buy their product over other competitors. This is known as consumerism. During this time period, brand loyalty among customers also developed. With brand loyalty companies could count on selling the same product and new products to the same customers.
Ads also became frequent in magazines and newspapers. By putting ads in popular magazines like The Saturday Evening Post, New York Daily News, and Time companies could now reach millions of consumers on a daily basis. This would then became the start of mass media. New ad strategies then developed like hiring movie stars or athletes.

Coca-cola is one example of how advertising changed from the 1880s to the 1920s. When Coke first was introduced, it was used to cure headaches and refresh the body. Then in 1920s, the company wanted to expand its business and get more brand loyalty among consumers. This resulted in the Coke we know today.
