Woman's Role in the Victorian Era

     In the Victorian era, a women place was in the home. Women were not able to make decisions and were also not able to own property. Women were expected to be weak and helpless. There role was to bear a large family and make sure the household was clean and ran smoothly. Women were also expected to remain faithful to the man and if the women ended up divorcing they would not be accepted in society.

In the past women were inferior to men. Men would own the women and the women would not be able to have property or hold money. When the man died, the woman would not receive the the inheritance and could lose the money she earned herself. Then a breakthrough happened in 1922 where women in Alberta were able to own property under their own name. Also in the past women were not even considered to be an individual. However by 1920, the 19th amendment was passed allowing women the right to vote starting to give them individuality from men. Throughout the 1920s, women were active in movements like labor movements. They would have a big affect in the future in helping influence the people on issues.

Thinking like a Historian: Through Their Eyes

Through a woman's eyes they didn't think that they were getting much respect. When World War I came around women were the main people working the factories and the men went to go fight. So they felt the need to go get some right where they told speeches and held rallies until finally they go the right to vote. This was a step towards women gaining equal rights to men.
