Harlem Renaissance

Picture
The Harlem Renaissance was a period of black pride. Most of the great works of the Harlem Renaissance had to do with trying to recover their African traditions. In doing so, Harlem became famous for the artistic achievements of its inhabitants. Some of these African Americans became actors, artists, musicians, and writers. The Harlem Renaissance especially flourished with the rise of the Jazz Age. Not only did the African Americans enjoy jazz music, but whites also shared their love for the music. Some of the most famous jazz musicians were Bessie Smith and Paul Robeson.

Marcus Garvey

Picture
Marcus Garvey was a black immigrant from Jamaica that brought the United Negro Improvement Association to Harlem. Garvey advocated racial pride for African Americans and had political ideas for black nationalism. Garvey also established organizations for black separatism, economic self-sufficiency and a back-to-Africa movement. Later in 1925, Garvey was convicted and jailed for fraud. He then was deported back to Jamaica and his movement ended up breaking apart. Even though Garvey was deported he helped inspired many African Americans to embrace the idea of black pride.

Thinking Like a Historian: Using the Past

Picture
The Harlem Renaissance taught us a lot about the past that we know now in the present. First, African Americans were segregated and not given a chance to succeed, however with their talent they were able to show people that they are just as talented or better than the whites. This showed that the whites were not as superior in all categories like they thought they were.
