The 1920s was a time of new ideas and ways of thinking in America. However many new attitudes clashed with past ideas and despite changing attitudes, intolerance was still strong. Unfortunately, attitudes towards immigrants, blacks, and other minorities became unchanged. The KKK was especially strong during the 20s and greatly affected politics. Americans were also strongly against immigration and pushed for anti-immigration laws. In addition to immigration, Americans became fearful of possible communist, socialist, and anarchist attacks. This became known as the "Red Scare". Social debates then developed on the issue of evolution vs. creation and Fundamentalism vs. Pentecostalism.
